Calculate the number
Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded. A team with 18 goals for and 12 against has a goal difference of plus six. A team with nine for and 14 against has minus five.
| Example team | Goals for | Goals against | Goal difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harbor | 18 | 12 | +6 |
| Valley | 15 | 9 | +6 |
| North | 9 | 14 | -5 |
These are invented examples for arithmetic, not real standings.
Notice what it does not show
Harbor and Valley have the same goal difference, but their scoring and conceding totals differ. The number also does not reveal which opponents they faced, how recent the goals were or whether they played the same number of matches.
It is a useful summary, not a complete evaluation of attacking or defensive quality. A large win can change it quickly without explaining an entire season.
Check the table rules
Competitions do not all use the same tie-break order. Before saying goal difference puts one team above another, read that competition’s current ranking rules. Points, head-to-head results and other criteria may matter in a specified sequence.
When reading a table, locate the column key first. Then check matches played and points before using goal difference to understand a tie. Our Premier League introduction adds the league context.
