How does the Premier League work? A guide for U.S. fans
The table, points, 38-game season and relegation, explained with a simple example for new football fans.

A season-long league table
The Premier League is the top division of English men’s league football. Its 20 clubs each play 38 league matches: one at home and one away against every other club. The final table decides the champion.
A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none. The league schedule normally runs from August into May, spanning two calendar years. That is why a season is written as 2026/27 rather than simply 2026.
Read the table in the right order
Start with points, then check matches played. Two clubs on the same total may have played different numbers of games, so the table alone does not always describe an equal comparison.
Here is an invented example. Club A wins four matches, draws two and loses one. Its total is 14 points: 12 from the wins and two from the draws. Club B wins four, draws one and loses two, for 13 points. One draw accounts for the gap.
If points are level, goal difference is the next sorting measure, followed by goals scored. Goal difference means goals scored minus goals conceded. A side with 30 scored and 20 conceded has a difference of +10. Further tiebreak rules apply where needed; the official league explanation is linked below.
Why the bottom of the table matters
The bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship, the division below. This changes which league those teams play in the next season. It is one reason a late-season match can matter deeply even when neither club is competing for the title.
At the other end, league positions can qualify clubs for European competitions. The precise allocation depends on the applicable season and competition results. Do not assume one fixed cutoff explains every Champions League or Europa League place.
An American viewing checklist
Before watching, look up three things: the competition, the table and the fixture date. A club can play a domestic cup match or a European match between its Premier League games. Those results do not add league points to this table.
If a commentator says a team has a game in hand, it has played fewer matches than the comparison team. That is an opportunity to earn points, not points already won. Treat predictions based on that extra match as predictions.
