Your first soccer match in America: plan the day, enjoy the game

A first stadium visit is easier when you make the small decisions before joining the crowd. Start on the club’s official match page and work outward from there.

Check the details that vary

Confirm the date, local kickoff time and venue on the official event listing. Read the stadium’s bag policy, entry rules and ticket instructions for that particular game. Do not assume a rule from another arena applies here, even if both host soccer.

For mobile tickets, complete the steps described by the ticket provider before leaving. Work out the route to the gate, not just the address of the stadium. If you are meeting friends, choose a landmark outside the busiest entrance and agree on a backup meeting point.

Choose the experience you want

Look at the seating map before choosing a section. Think about sightlines, access and whether you want a quieter seat or the atmosphere near organized supporters. Check the club’s description of any special section rather than guessing from the ticket price.

You do not need a brand-new jersey to belong at a match. Comfortable clothing suited to the forecast and the stadium rules is enough. A scarf or shirt you already own can do the job.

Plan the trip home too

Check when transit services finish or where your pickup will happen. A little preparation leaves more attention for the game itself: the movement away from the ball, the crowd’s reactions and the moments a television camera cannot show all at once.
